Chapter Ninety-six

Lin Xiangru bends the king of Qin to his will not once but twice.

King Huiwen of Zhao was particularly fond of one of his eunuchs, a man named Miao Xian, and as a result he was given the position of director of the palace staff and interfered much in the business of government.

Suddenly one day it happened that a visitor from abroad offered Miao Xian a white jade disc for purchase. Impressed by the beautiful color of the jade and its flawless quality, he bought it for the price of five hundred gold pieces. Afterwards, he showed it to a jade worker. The jade worker was amazed and said: “This is Bian He’s jade disc. It was lost at a party held by Zhao Yang, the Grand Vizier of the kingdom of Chu, and everyone thought that Zhang Yi had stolen it. He was beaten to within an inch of his life and ended up seeking office in Qin because of this. Later on, Zhao Yang offered a reward of one thousand pieces of gold for this jade, but whoever stole it did not dare to come forward. In the end, he never saw it again. Today by pure chance it has fallen into your hands. This is indeed a priceless treasure, and you must guard it carefully. Do not show it to anyone else unless you are quite sure they are trustworthy.”

“I can see this is a fine jade,” Miao Xian said. “Why do you say that it is priceless?”

“If you put this jade in a dark place, it will glow naturally,” he replied. “It can remove impurities as well as warding off evil influences, hence its other name: ‘Night-Shining Jade.’ If you put it by your seat you will find it warm in winter months, just like a stove, while in the summer it is cool. paces of it. With such remarkable properties, is it surprising that no other jade can match it? This is the greatest of treasures.”

Miao Xian tested it, and all the man’s words proved to be true. He had a box made for it and hid it in his clothes chest. By this time someone had already reported to the king of Zhao: “Miao Xian has laid hands on Bian He’s jade disc.”

The king of Zhao asked Miao Xian to give it to him, but the latter loved it too much to hand it over. This made the king of Zhao angry.

Taking advantage of a hunting trip, he arrived at Miao Xian’s house unexpectedly and searched the place. When he discovered the box containing the treasure, he simply removed it.

Miao Xian was afraid that His Majesty might punish him and decided to flee. One of his servants, Lin Xiangru, grabbed hold of his clothing and demanded: “Where are you going?”

“I am going to flee to Yan,” Miao Xian replied.
